remembered
i don't want to add too much to the hysteria that has become 911. all i want to do is offer my prayers to all the survivors, and those who lost loved ones...
what makes me totally sick to my stomach is that some people here have no compasion. yes, we are half a world away... and in some cases it really did not effect some places of Hong Kong. But i know for a fact that there is not a single person who doesn't know about the 911 attacks. for me, it's a little different. I'm american. yes, i'm also chinese, but for almost half of my life i lived in the states... and i always write down american when prompted for nationality.... but here, being american is like being cursed these days. i think that i feel no different than the average Joe in Texas... it happened, but it didn't effect me as much as it could have. i also agree emphatically that people should move on.. and that there is definitely overkill in some... or many, circumstances...
but not on the memorial day.. the one year anniversary.
ranging from snide poor attempts at humor from my good friends, to general sweeping remarks from close friends, to down-right racists remarks from co-workers... in the last 2 days, i've heard it all. naturally because i'm american, i get many of the remarks... but even with the bravado, the overkill, the patriotism.. it's the damn one year anniversary of a day where over 3000 people died... mostly civilians... not in a war, not in a battle field.. but at work.. in their offices, homes... i'm not going to argue on behalf of the people who jumped 40 stories to their death... i don't need to... but overkill? i dont think so.
sure, some people take it too far.. but man... people here in Hong Kong are sometimes jerks. get this, while watching the coverage of when they were reading the names of the NYC deaths... the Hong Kong studio brought on some 'professional' to 'comment' on the events that day. this guy only talked about the economy. no reference to the mass death and destruction, no mention of pain... or recovery.. just money. what an embarrassment.. but that pretty much sums up the whole feeling on the asia side...
all i'm saying is that out here, we only remember 1 day out of the year.... can people here at least respect that? guess it's just too much to ask...
